Sierra Fin is an indy band from Sydney, Australia with an impressive body of work which pushes boundaries of genre and creativity. They were looking for someone to work with them to conceive and direct the clip for their new single ‘The Tide’. After seeing some of my work and meeting (in a delightfully air conditioned office in Fox Studios amidst the thick heat of a Sydney summer), they engaged me for the project.

As is expected for an independent band, they had a limited budget (lets face it all budgets are limited - it’s just a matter of how well one uses it) and so, as well as working with them on the concept and directing the clip I performed the additional roles of DOP, editor and effects for the project.

After much pre production and development I shot the clip in a green screen studio in Fox studios. The budget was such that I was a ‘one man band’ which allowed me to move fast and the shooting was completed in a single day - the post production however took several weeks as the initial ideas were refined and put together in the edit suite.

We wanted the feel of the clip to be very rhythmic and layered; almost cyclical. I achieved this by utilising green screen and looping and layering clips in a sometimes hypnotic way with ever increasing visual surprises and hooks.

While technically some aspects of the clip are not without it’s kinks, I think it is a simple-yet-complex film clip and a delight for viewers to watch. The clip was broadcast on Rage in Australia and other music TV channels around the world.
